United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), a leading contract maker of semiconductors, on Monday announced that it has manufactured the foundry industry’s first fully functional 28nm SRAM chips.
The chips are based on UMC’s independently developed low-leakage (LL) process technology. UMC utilized advanced double-patterning immersion lithography and strained silicon technology to produce the chips, which feature very small six-transistor SRAM cell sizes of approximately 0.122 micron².
UMC incorporates a dual approach for its 28nm technology to address different market applications.

Open-source company Novell is to acquire the business-services management firm Managed Objects.
Novell announced on Tuesday that it would acquire Managed Objects to add data and workload monitoring tools to the Novell portfolio.
“This acquisition extends Novell’s strategy of making IT work as one in the datacentre,” said Joe Wagner, senior vice president of systems and resource management at Novell. “Managed Objects’s products are very complementary to our existing management and virtualisation capabilities.”
Senior Canalys analyst Andy Buss told on Wednesday that the deal made sense from Novell’s point of view, especially considering its licensing deal with Microsoft.
“It fits with where Novell wants to go В— the services-based model,” said Buss.

Rambus, memory and interface technology licensing company, today announced that the United States Supreme Court has denied Samsung’s request for review in the case stemming from the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA). In practice this may mean that Samsung Electronics has lost legal battle against Rambus.
In previous rulings, EDVA Judge Robert E. Payne held that the case with Samsung was “exceptional” and attempted to make certain factual findings against Rambus relating to alleged destruction of documents.
