Intel readies remote PC access function

Intel has developed technology that allows users to remotely power up their computers and retrieve files across an internet connection, according to a report on The Wall Street Journal’s website on Wednesday.

The technology, called Remote Wake, will work only on PCs that use a recently introduced chipset from Intel and requires new software to be loaded onto the PC, according to the report. The technology will also reportedly allow PCs that use internet-based phones services to be remotely activated to receive calls. Remote Wake could also allow consumers using a web-enabled phone or a laptop connected to the internet to activate their PCs and retrieve files, according to the report.

Programs that allow users to remotely access files on their PCs are already on the market, but those computers must be left turned on to allow access to files.

AMD to Discuss Rival for Intel Atom Towards Year End

The market of ultra low-cost personal computers (ULCPCs) is on the rise these days as many PC vendors are looking forward to add appropriate products into the lineup. Nonetheless, Advanced Micro Devices, the world’s No. 2 maker of x86 central processing units (CPUs), is not particularly enthusiastic about such systems despite of the fact that it does have a processor to address the segment.

Answering a question about AMD’s response to Intel Corp.’s Atom processor, the new chief executive officer of the company, Dirk Meyer, said that AMD was looking forward the market, but would discuss actual products only in November, 2008.

Intel chip launch targets robots, cars and TV

Intel has announced the first of its new range of System on Chip (SoC) devices, which will combine most of an x86-based computer on a single chip.

Based around the Pentium M core, the EP80579 also contains a memory controller, gigabit Ethernet, Sata, USB and other standard PC interfaces. Optionally, it can also include a Security Services Unit with trusted platform and encryption functions.

Available in eight variants with speeds between 600MHz and 1.2 GHZ and power consumption between 11.5 and 21 watts, the chip is intended for use in embedded, internet-connected systems such as cars, robotic devices and set-top boxes.

Intel claims the chip uses 34 percent less power and takes up 45 percent less space than designs based on existing individual processor, interface and controller chips.

The company says it has 15 further SoC projects in the pipeline, many of which will centre on the recently unveiled, very low-power Atom core.

Indian schools boost demand for virtual PCs

Bolstered by demand from Indian educational institutions, US-based NComputing said it expects its revenues from India to increase from seven percent now, to 35 percent by the end of 2009.

“In the coming year, we are going to deploy more than one million virtual desktops and a large chunk of these will be deployed in India,” Stephen Dukker, chairman and chief executive of NComputing, said in a phone interview.

A provider of desktop virtualisation software and hardware, NComputing has witnessed rapid growth in India, with companies such as NIIT, Maruti Udyog, HCL, Educomp Solutions and the Azim Premji Foundation, buying its virtual desktops.

The NComputing offering encompasses virtualisation software that enables a single PC to be shared by several users, bringing the cost of acquiring a PC to as low as $70 (35), according to the company.
