SanDisk offers secure USB storage for Macs

SanDisk on Thursday introduced a Mac version of its secure USB storage device.

A lack of Mac support has kept enterprises from being able to effectively support removable-media security policies across all their users, according to SanDisk. The Cruzer Enterprise can be initialised from either OS X or Windows.

The device, said to be the first of its kind by SanDisk, uses hardware-based 256-bit AES encryption and imposes mandatory access control on all files as protection against loss or theft of the drive. Users can access all of the drive’s encryption features from the Mac, including shutting down access to the encrypted storage area, managing passwords and changing preferences.

The Cruzer Enterprise is available in configurations of 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB, and supports OS X 10.4 ‘Tiger’ and OS X 10.5 ‘Leopard’.

“STB revenues for all platforms have declined significantly between 2007 and 2009, but will recover by 2010 and remain relatively stable through at least 2013,” said ABI Research principal analyst Robert Clark.

Sales of basic STBs have already been falling for some time; now HD-only and PVR-only STBs are also showing the first signs of downturn. From 2009 on, Mr.

Sales of Blu-Ray Disc Players Below Expectations, Movie Prices Should Get Cheaper – Sony

A Sony Electronics executive admitted in an interview on Thursday that sales of standalone Blu-ray disc players fell short of expectations and would not meet worldwide sales goal due to economic slump. The exec also said that once Blu-ray movies become more affordable, this could spur the interest for the standard.

Sony and Blu-ray disc Association set the target to sell five million of standalone Blu-ray disc players worldwide in 2008 with the vast majority sold in the USA. However, now Sony believes that the target will not be achieved and there will be around 4.5 million of devices sold through globally.

“It’s not that far off of it. Maybe 10% off of what we had thought.
