At the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, Anand Chandrasekher, general manager for the chipmaker’s Ultra Mobility Group, shows a wafer with ‘Lincroft’ В— the main processor for Moorestown.

The new, integrated chip, designed for the smartphone market, is expected before the 2009-10, according to Chandrasekher.

Intel launches next-generation Classmate PC

Intel has launched its second-generation Classmate PC at the Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai.

The new notebook, launched on Thursday, shares its basic hardware design with the first generation Classmate as well as a focus on the developing-world education markets. However, Intel said it was responding to interest elsewhere: “We will be expanding into the mature markets, including Europe and the US,” said Lila Ibrahim, general manager of Intel’s emerging market platform’s group.

Upgrades to the Classmate PC platform include a 9-inch LCD, integrated camera and a user-replaceable battery. This can be four- or six-cell, giving three or five hours’ operation. The upgraded system can also have an optional 30GB hard disk instead of 1GB, 2GB or 4GB flash drives, and the 802.11b/g wireless networking now has a mesh mode to connect Classmates where there’s no wireless infrastructure.

Intel sales rise in Q3 on record microprocessor shipments

Intel Corp. said today that a spike in the number of microprocessor units shipped helped it record an increase in its third-quarter revenue and income.

Intel reported third-quarter revenue of $10.1 billion, a 15% increase from the same period a year earlier. That performance beat Thomson Financial analysts’ estimates of $9.617 billion. The company also recorded net income of $1.9 billion, a 43% increase year over year.

The company reported earnings per share of 32 cents, matching analysts’ estimates.

Intel said that it shipped more than 2 million quad-core processors during the quarter.

Intel made a number of big announcements during the quarter, which ended Sept. 29.

IDF: Intel will release updated Centrino in January

Intel Corp. will update its Centrino laptop package in January with a new processor and better graphics.

The update, called Santa Rosa Refresh, will replace Centrino’s current processors with chips made using a 45-nanometer production process — part of Intel’s Penryn chip family — instead of the 65-nm process now in use. The number refers to the average feature size that can be created on a chip, and smaller is generally better.

The planned release of Santa Rosa Refresh is set to be announced Wednesday by Dadi Perlmutter, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s Mobility Group, during a scheduled speech at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco.

Moving to a more advanced manufacturing process typically results in faster chips that consume less power.
